Broomfield Fact Sheet
2005 Broomfield, CO. Healing Field Fact Sheet
In 2005, North Metro Fire Rescue, Broomfield Police
Department and the City & County of Broomfield are sponsoring a
Healing Field in tribute to civilians and first responders who did in
the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and to those soldiers who
have died in action during the war on terrorism.
What is a Healing Field?
A Healing Field is a flag display set up in
recognition of a particular event or group of people. Made of
American and Coalition Forces flags, the Broomfield display will
consist of approximately 5,000 flags representing those killed in the
9/11 attacks and the soldiers who have been killed while fighting
against terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq. In addition to the flag
display, there will be a public ceremony on September 11th
at which all of the names of the individuals being honored will be
read. Then at 11:00 a.m. there will be an Official Opening
Ceremony for the community.
Why do we want a Healing Field in Colorado?
This is a unique opportunity to offer the
Denver-Metro area and Northern Colorado an event that is not political,
yet is patriotic, and is well-suited to families (with no cost to the
family unless they choose to sponsor a flag for $20.) This event
will be a celebration of our freedoms and a chance to reflect upon the
sacrifices being made daily by our soldiers protecting these freedoms.
Each afternoon at 5:00 p.m. there will be a short ceremony to honor any
soldier killed in action that day.
When will the event take place?
The Healing Field in Broomfield will be located at
3 Community Park Road in Broomfield. The flags will go up on the
morning of September 11, 2005. The flag installation will use the
skills of scouts, youth groups, civic organizations and individual
volunteers. Military and first responder agencies will also
participate in many parts of the event. The Official Opening
Ceremony will immediately proceed after flag installation—with the
tentative start time being 11:00 a.m.
What other activities are taking place?
In addition to the installation and Official
Opening Ceremony, each day at 5 p.m., during this 8-day Healing Field
event, U.S. Flags will be posted in a brief ceremony for any Coalition
Force fatalities that occur within that previous 24-hour period. The
ceremonies will be short, only lasting between 5 and 10 minutes.
Also, on the final day of the Healing Field, September 18, 2005, there
will be an Official Closing Ceremony at noon. Shortly after the
Healing Field is closed, sponsored flags will be available for pick-up
by the community.
How can you help?
Sponsor a flag for $20 and continue to fly it proudly at your home or place of business.
Individuals and volunteer groups wanting to assist
with this community project can also participate in one of the event
activities or multiple, as time permits. Some of the volunteer
opportunities include putting together flags, participating in the flag
installation ceremony, working at the information booth, and helping
with the flag distribution after the closing ceremony. If interested in
volunteering, please email the Healing Field Volunteer Coordinator at hfvc@northmetrofire.org
Who does my Flag Sponsorship benefit?
The
fundraising function of the Healing Field of Broomfield will benefit
the North Metro Community Foundation who will direct all proceeds to
the establishment of a permanent 9/11 Memorial for the Denver-Metro
community. This unique 9/11 Memorial is anticipated to be unveiled on
the 5-year Anniversary (2006) of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The
Memorial will be placed at an undetermined location in the North Metro
Fire District. The 9/11 Memorial will contain a 300-pound piece of
metal from one of the World Trade Center Tower Buildings.
