--A Flag Display-- That Inspires the World June 30-July 7, 2007   Merriam and Shawnee, KS will be the host cities to a 2007 Field of Honor of over 1700 U.S. flags.  These 3x5' flags will stand 8 foot tall in perfect rows and columns across a field of green.  This living display will fly as a patriotic tribute to the strength and unity of Americans.  The Field of Honor display will be located at Merriam Marketplace, this is a breathtaking display of patriotism and unity, this community project is free to all who wish to participate join us from June 30- July 7, 2007.  Bring a camera and your family.  Help us honor, remember and heal.  Hosted by: Resident and Business Volunteers from Merriam, KS and Shawnee, KS  The Proceeds from this  flag memorial will benefit: The SDBA intends to use these funds exclusively for overall improvements to downtown Shawnee, which will benefit the entire community.  Some of the things that this group is raising money for this year is to contribute to their annual donation for SafeHome (a battered women's shelter located in Shawnee) and also to help rehab homes in the downtown area for Seniors or disadvantaged citizens (similar to a "Christmas in October" program).  The Merriam Parks, Recreation, and Community Center Foundation is an independent, non-profit 501 c 3 organization which directly supports City of Merriam park and recreation facilities, programs, and parks.  Fund raising proceeds directly fund youth and adult program scholarships, purchase of equipment for the Irene B. French Community Center, purchase of original works of art for city buildings, sponsorships of the Music at the Marketplace Summer Concert Series, and support of the community center art gallery
